Background of the study:
In Iseyin Local Government Area, cultural resistance to western marriage practices has emerged as a significant phenomenon amid increasing globalization and modernization. Traditional marriage ceremonies, deeply rooted in indigenous customs and rituals, are increasingly contrasted with western wedding models characterized by formal ceremonies and standardized practices (Akinola, 2023). Many community members view western marriage practices as a departure from time-honored traditions that emphasize familial bonds, communal approval, and cultural continuity (Balogun, 2024). This resistance is not merely a rejection of modernity but a conscious effort to preserve unique cultural identities and ancestral heritage. The persistence of indigenous marriage rites reflects the community’s desire to maintain a connection with their cultural origins while negotiating the influences of global trends (Femi, 2025). This study examines how cultural resistance manifests in marriage practices, exploring the underlying motivations and implications for social cohesion and cultural preservation. It investigates whether these indigenous practices can coexist with or adapt to modern influences without compromising their traditional values (Olatunji, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Western marriage practices are increasingly encroaching on traditional marriage ceremonies in Iseyin, leading to cultural tension and resistance. This encroachment has raised concerns about the potential erosion of indigenous marital customs and the loss of cultural identity. Limited research exists on the dynamics of this cultural resistance. The study aims to explore how traditional values are maintained in the face of modern influences and to identify the challenges that arise from this cultural confrontation (Adebisi, 2023).
